What is Domain Name Space?
The structure of the DNS database is called domain name space. The structure of the DNS database is similar to an inverted tree whose top (zero) level is called the root. There are a total of 128 levels in the structure of the domain name space database. There are 0 levels to 127 levels in the DNS structure. Whose level 0 is called root. The root node is also called the null level.
How does the Domain Name System work?
The Domain Name System works like a service that translates domain names into IP addresses and IP addresses into domain names.
whenever we type the domain name in the web browser, DNS automatically translates the domain name into IP address and sends the request to the server through the IP address. And the server's response comes through IP address. The domain name system translates the IP address back into a domain name before the response reaches the browser. Due to which the user does not know that the communication is done through IP address but in reality the communication between the websites takes place through IP address.
Types of Domain Level
Although there are different types of domain names, the important domain names of all those types are being explained in detail below.
1. TLD-Top Level Domain:-
The name coming after the dot (.) in the domain name is called top level domain. This type of domain name was used for the first time. Various types of search engines give great importance to this type of domain name, due to which the websites having this type of domain get ranked easily.
Example:- .com (commercial), .org (organization), .edu (education), .gov(government) etc.
2. CCTLD-Country Code Top Level Domain:-
This type of domain name is named on the basis of country. In this type of domain name only two characters are used after the dot (.).
Example:- .in (India), .pk (Pakistan), .us (United States), .cn (China) etc.
Types of Domain Name
1. FQDN:-
FQDN stands for fully qualified domain name. If the level of domain name is terminated with null string then this type of domain name is called fully qualified domain name (FQDN). In other words, the entire address of the host is called fully qualified domain name.
Example:- As per the picture (Bilaspur.rail.gov.in) is a fully qualified domain name.
2.PQDN:-
PQDN stands for Partially qualified domain name. If the domain name level is not terminated with a null string, then this type of domain name is called Partially Qualified Domain Name (FQDN). In other words, some part of the entire address of the host is called Partially Qualified Domain Name.
Example:- As per the picture (rail.gov.in) is a fully qualified domain name.
DNS in the Internet
The Domain Name System is a name resolution service for TCP/IP that is used across a variety of platforms. The domain name space in the Internet is divided into three different categories. Which are as follows.
1. Inverse Domain:-
All those domains which are used to map IP address to domain name are called inverse domains.
2. Generic Domain:-
All those domains which are named according to the nature of the organization are called generic domains.
Example:- .com (commercial), .org (organization), .edu (education), .gov(government) etc.
3. Country Domain:-
All those domains which are named on the basis of country are called country domains.
Example:- .in (India), .pk (Pakistan), .us (United States), .cn (China) etc.
